The UK Bangladesh Football Team managed by London Tigers took part in the Inner City World Cup 2010 in Greenwich. The tournament was held at Charlton Park in Greenwich on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th May 2010. In the preliminary rounds the team did extremely. They beat Italy 3-2, Djibuoti 1-0 and Iraq 2-1.

In the 2nd round they faced last years Champions Nigeria. This was a tough game, however, the UK Bangladesh Football team did very well and faced their opponents with much enthusiasm. However, in the last 5 minutes of the 1st half, Nigeria gained the upper and took their 1st goal and putting Bangladesh under pressure. Not to be outdone, in the 2nd half Bangladesh fought hard to stay in the game giving it all they got. They fought hard and got a few opportunities to equal but to no avail. Nigeria defended well and kept their edge over Bangladesh.

In the last 10 minutes, Nigeria got another opportunity when Bangladesh left their defence weak and scored their 2nd goal. This put Bangladesh under extremely pressure with only 10 minutes to go. They fought back even harder, but to no avail. The final whistle blew with Nigeria winning 2-0.

London Tigers started well, winning a free kick 30 yards from the goal early in the game (25th minute). Adil Salih took the free kick and delivered a fine ball which floated inside the penalty area to find Edson Cata at the back post who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net (1-0). Punjab United almost scored an equalizer immediately, however, the ball was cleared of the line by Tazmul Ahmed after great work by the keeper Kieron Jimmy. The rest of the half was very much end to end play with no other clear chances. Half time (1-0) to London Tigers.

In the second half Punjab United were fortunate to be awarded a free kick from 28 yards. Manraj Dhillon scored a superb free kick which went over the wall and into the net to score an equalizer (1-1). Nearing the end it looked as if the game would go into penalty shoot out, with neither teams having clear advantage over their opponent. However in the last 5 minutes Terence Cariba went inside the penalty box with one defender in his path, however he overcame the obstacle to drill the ball in the right hand side of the goal in the 88th minute (2-1). Punjab United fought hard to put some pressure on London Tigers in the final few minutes but to no avail. The game ended with London Tigers becoming champions for the 3rd time.

The final was played on the Lords Nursery ground, with St. Peters College winning the toss and deciding to bat first. The quality and experience of English Channel Cricket club knocked down the St. Peters College wickets very cheaply for just 50 all out. The team from Brighton, then chasing only 51 to win, continued to attack with the bat, reaching their target within 4 overs without the loss of any wicket. English Channel Cricket Club have justified the tag of being favourites for the tournament.

The final of the 8th Annual UK Asian Community Cup was held on 10th May 2010 at Stamford Bridge, home of Premiership Champions Chelsea FC. The two finalists were 2 time winners London Tigers and last year’s runners up Punjab United Sports from Wolverhampton.
