Tour To Bangladesh
In January 2005 London Tigers took 35 Bangladeshi youth and adults back to their roots in Bangladesh.
This project was started up by the London Tigers Sunday Team steering group. They felt the overwhelming demand form the players from across Westminster, Camden, Hayes, Ealing, Brent and other areas, was significant enough to look at how they could facilitate this project. A budget breakdown was carried and the players were told they needed to contribute £450 towards the flight costs and the remaining cost would be raised through sponsorship. After 3 months of intensive training and fundraising the players were told the good news that all the project costs were raised and tour itinerary was confirmed. The tour took place between 21st January – 5th February 2005 There were 2 major matches and the results were as follows: The first match was between Sonali Otith FC and London Tigers in the capital of Bangladesh (Dhaka). Sonali Otith FC is comprised of ex-international players that represented Bangladesh in the yester years including the likes of Aslam Khan (top Bangladeshi goal scorer). This was a fantastic game played at the national stadium in Dhaka and the score was 1-1 in a very well contested game.
The second game was one of the main reasons for the tour taking place. It took place in the setting of the Sylhet Region; this is where a majority of the Bangladeshi’s living in the UK are from. The players that went to Bangladesh wanted to show the local people that UK Bangladeshi citizen are not only hard workers but also able to compete at the highest level in sports. This game attracted a local crowd of over 5000 people who witnessed London Tigers defeat Moulvibazar district team 1-0
