London Tigers hosted the Conservative Friends of Bangladesh Social Action Project Shapla in Sylhet, Bangladesh from 16th September onwards. A mixture of 50 boys and girls played cricket with the visiting delegation, exchanged gifts and the British Members of Parliament gave words of encouragement for the young Sylhet Tigers Cricket Centre members. Anne Main MP, Paul Scully MP and many other Non-Resident Bangladeshis living in the UK led the visiting CFoB group.
It is true to say that cricket has put Bangladesh on the international map. The discipline, opportunity and hope it provides are strong driving forces to help change societal attitudes and today we saw several girls bowling against males and taking part in a game that is open and inclusive for all.
On their second day, London Tigers Bangladesh Project Manager Md Siraj Uddin hosted the CFoB group during their visit to the London Tigers football programme working with children from the Tea Garden community where 25 girls, 10 Tea Garden representatives and around 600 spectators watched the proceedings at Sylhet Doldoli field in Sylhet. The delegates played football, launched the Excelsior Sylhet Resorts Tea Garden Football League and gave away kits to the participants. They exchanged gifts with dignitaries Mr. Rahat Anwar (Deputy Commissioner Sylhet), Mr. Shaiful Alam Chowdhury Nadel (Director BCB & General Secretary Sylhet Divisional Sports Association), Mahi Uddin Ahmed Salim (BFF member & General Secretary Sylhet DSA), Mr. Syed Mahmood Hassan (Manager of the Tea estate).
The MP’s and their entourage played a game against the London Tigers orange and gold girls under 14 team from Sylhet tea estates. This new pilot programme aims to empower girls, increase their confidence and allow them to have fun as there are no sporting facilities for this group currently. Through this programme wider social issues are identified and supported on a voluntary basis.
This pilot project for girls and Excelsior Sylhet Hotel & Resort Tea Garden Football League 2017 is sponsored by Mr Jilu Miah – Chairman Excelsior Hotel & Resort who is also the Hon. Chairman of London Tigers Football Committee.
London Tigers would like to thank him and Excelsior Sylhet for their kind generosity in helping create opportunities for disadvantaged people to fulfil their dreams! London Tigers was delighted to organise this event and highlight the work being done as part of the London Tigers International programme.
