Tower Hamlets Mayor and Paralympic Champion at London Tigers Badminton Competition

Over 100 local residents participated in the London Tigers Badminton Competition at Stepney Green School on Saturday 18th March. The winners and runners up received their awards from Chief Guest the Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs, and special guests, the Deputy Speaker Cllr Sabina Akhtar, Cllr Mahbub Alam and Sharon Jones-Barnes, Paralympics Badminton Champion for England.

In the Women’s competition, 12 teams competed and the winners were Quyen Diep, 55, Isle of Dogs and Husna Khanomage, 48, Mile End and the runners up were Farhana Riju, 40, Bow and Aatia Shahid, 14, Stratford.

In the Men’s category, 14 teams competed. Mohammed Babor, 41, Poplar and Jamil Ahmed, 40, Hackney won whilst Taaj Miah, 39, Poplar and Rajib Ahmed, 41, Isle of Dogs, took the runners up award. The youngest competitors also received medals from the Mayor for their participation.

Alongside the competition, the event hosted friendly badminton sessions and an aerobic sessions for the women and children. Participants were from all over Tower Hamlets with age ranging from 12 to 65 years old.

“This the first time London Tigers hosted a men and women’s competition at the same time and place,” said Mesba Ahmed, CEO of London Tigers. “This was successful because London Tigers takes care to cater to the needs of the communities we serve. We divided the hall with a curtain to create a separate comfortable, private, women-only section encouraging and enabling participation from women with cultural and religious needs. This is what has helped us get such an inspirationally diverse and mixed attendance to our event.”

The Badminton Competition is part of a health project run by London Tigers and funded by Tower Hamlets Council to get local residents physically active. The project encourages helps residents to lead a healthy lifestyle, tackles mental health issues and reduces isolation by providing people with a safe place to practice physical exercise and meet new friends in their neighbourhood.
